and I expected the 2 Track 15 IPS tapes to sell for $80 - $100 each which is very, very expensive but the cost of blank tape has been sky-rocketing while CD-R and DVD-R blanks continue to dive! I cannot see why they have to be $329 each? But they are selling more than they can duplicate. Real time duplicating is a time consuming process.
Did you read what I wrote about "The Tape Project's" pricing in "My Muses"?
The Tape Project and the real world
"I am sure The Tape Project 2 Track 15 IPS Reel to Reels are the finest recordings ever released to the public but I can't justify the cost for myself as I make $8.54 per hour. But for the upper middle class and the rich why not have the best? So even though they cost $329.00 each I am leaving them on my site as these are the closest we are likely ever to get to Master tape quality.
The fastest speed I can play is 7 1/2 IPS and my deck is 4 Track NAB. 2 Track 15 IPS machines even used are very expensive.
All of my 4 Track 7 1/2 IPS Reel to Reels have been purchased from eBay and the average price is $8.84 including shipping and handling. When you figure the ones I had to throw away due to squeaking, missing tape, bad splices, etc. my total outlay is just over $10 per tape and I have some fantastic sounding ones including some duplicated in real time on mastering tape.
I would love to have most of "The Tape Project's" Reel to Reels, maybe someday I will be rich?"
So if I were rich I could justify $329 each for a few of The Tape Project's Reel to Reels but I could never justify $15,000 for a single component even if I made $100 an hour! Oh I got a raise since I wrote this I now make $8.71 per hour.
But I'm not rich I had planned to save up for a few of the Tape Project's 2 Track 15 IPS Reel to Reels when I thought they were going to be under $100 each. I spent 6 months watching eBay auctions for 10 inch 2 Track 15 IPS Reel to Reel decks that were guaranteed working, many recently service and specs checked and most went for $500 to $900 each. I was kind of hoping to get a nice minty deck for around $300 or so. But I guess I will have to be happy with 4 Track 7 1/2 IPS, Cassettes, LPs, SACDs, DVD-Audios, 24/96 DADs, and CDs.
Most of my SACDs cost $15 or less, although I just bought the overpriced Blue Coast Collection SACD for $26.99 at Elusive Disc's 10% off Memorial weekend sale, it should be here next week. It is my most expensive SACD.
So if I was a millionaire I could justify $329 each for a few of the Tape Project's tapes but I could not justify $15,000 for a single component.
I have never said everyone has to live in my budget, I never said everyone has to buy at discount. But even though I could never afford a $1,000 - $5,000 component I can understand rich people buying these but $15,000 is just too bizarre for me to even contemplate someone, anyone even a millionaire actually laying down the long green! Myself I try not to spend over $500 for a single component, I have broken this a few times. The first time is when I paid $1,500 for the Sony DVD-S9000ES, I was on a waiting list for a whole month for the pleasure of paying full retail. SACD has been out for over a year but the least expensive player was the 777ES and $3,500 which was way out of my price range. I had to sell a bunch of LPs to raise the money for the 9000ES, I will not do this again. I love the sonics of my Yamaha at less than 1/3 the price. So I won't be a sucker again.
