This past week I visited the home of Mr. Siegfried Linkwitz. To say Mr. Linkwitz is an audio guru is an understatement. You can find information about him at the link below.

Anyway, I visited Mr. Linkwitz to audition his Orion speakers, a dipole design. I am not in the market for speakers; I am very satisfied with what I own. But as an audiophile I regularly audition speakers that I have reason to believe might be special. Besides you never know!!!

Before listening Mr. Linkwitz pointed out features of his set up that related to driving the Orions. For example, the speaker system features (of course) his own crossover network that requires tri-amplification. But what I could not help but notice was there were no fancy name electronics (or interconnects or speaker cable). The brand names of the gear were decidely forgettable. I do remember the Pioneer Universal player!

BUT the system sounded fabulous. And on some very demanding material I threw at it during my 3+ hour audition. In fact, I would rank it among the top systems I have heard regardless of price. Was it perfect? Of course not, but I left believing that there was nothing on the electronics side of the equation that could have made the system sound better to my ears. This I believe even though the electronics were decidedly not expensive. One could argue that the system would have sounded even better if it included even one “Class A electronic component”. But I would not make that argument, because clearly Mr. Linkwitz could have had ultra expensive gear (or even moderately expensive gear) if he wanted to make his speaker system “really” shine. Right? Perhaps he has concluded that it would serve no audible purpose and/or excellent speakers trumps expensive electronics even if said electronics are excellent.
