I am the owner of a VSE XB 940, recently I upgraded the machine to level 6 status. To say I am thrilled with the sound would be a severe understatement. Nothing else I have heard short of the very best analogue can actually capture the sensation of say a saxophonist really blowing hard into his instrument. The sound swells majestically with realistic sounding fullness and dynamic range, not the mechanical sounding shifts in volume we get from inferior digital at least when playing SACD. The sound is tremendously pure too.
I think the 940 is pretty much as good as the 9000 once the grounding issues are dealt to.
As an aside the grounding problem with these machines is dramatic and for some reason fixing them will mean your machine will run considerable cooler. It certainly happened with mine. This ought to promote extended life from the transport which certainly can be a little flaky. I suggest you order a new laser from Allen if and when you do the upgrade.
RGDS,
Rob.
