I've owned that Onkyo model for 4 years now in my Home Theater system (see profile). It's been used primarily for DVD's though it had a lot of usage for all of the audio formats early on. I inquired with a few modders to see if they would be willing to make some improvements, but no takers.
I haven't had a single problem with this player. It loads quickly and reads any disc I feed it. It's surprisingly heavy and is solidly built. It sounds pretty good, but I've never played it against my more expensive players which are in my 2 channel system. You can definitely hear superiority of SACD and DVD-A over RBCD, despite playing through my receiver. Also, the sound presentation is better when RBCD's are converted to analog by the Onkyo player's DAC (in Direct CD mode) as opposed to sending the digital signal to be decoded by my Onkyo receiver.
