Bullethead, sorry to hear you are having problems with the NAD M5. FWIW, the M5 unit I bought in December 2007 appears to have been manufactured in July 2007, and it has been working well. Given today's ultra-short product cycles and manufacturing runs, not to mention the potential for firmware "upgrades," a unit manufactured in 2006 could certainly be of different vintage than one manufactured in mid-2007.
I recall that in December when I auditioned a floor demo unit, the dealer quietly mentioned there had been some "issues" with earlier M5 units, but that these had been corrected in current production. I didn't attempt to learn the nature of the issues or the means or time frame for correction. ("Oh, well, that's par for the SACD course," I thought). I did ask about the warranty period, which I couldn’t find in NAD’s published literature, and which the dealer was uncertain of. He finally said, “It’s at least two years, maybe more.” That was good enough for me: I would *not* have bought any SACD player at an $1,800 price point with less than a two-year warranty. When I saw that the warranty certificate was actually for three years, I felt even better about the purchase. Also, the dealer had offered me a floor demo unit at a reduced price, but I told him I wanted "a new one, in the box."
As I wrote in another thread, I am really enjoying the NAD M5's sound, its basic functionality (a good remote control, etc.), and the understated exterior design of the unit. Its redbook CD reproduction is especially satisfying. I'll have to admit that I don't run the unit a lot of hours in any given week, but from what I can tell from my experience with other SACD players, intensity of use seems to have nothing to do with the failures and malfunctions.
