Well sounds good, better than cd. It's supposed to right? Also using the M5 as a transport is pretty good. I ordered an AES/EBU cable which will come soon for that purpose to connect up to the DAC.
I can't explain the sound other than "good". Well, the instruments are clear and precise, but nothing like my Vinyl setup (which is budget). I have about 6 SACDs now and I like it, it's just another player as far as I am concerned. My equipment is revealing and I haven't found any weakness in the M5 for the price. My player acts a bit quirky kind of weird, and NAD won't help me with a firmware update in CD form, they told me I have to bring it into a "controlled environment" under warranty. The player was built in 2006 (bought "new" in 2008), and I am sure the other "newly created" players perhaps don't behave like this: After a cd is played all the way through, I can't play it through again, only the first track plays. Also SACD stops producing analogue out after being in standby after a couple of days. To avoid the SACD playback issue I just power it off from the back, but that's still a minus on my part, I'm probably never buying another NAD product again, even if they label this "Masters series" it makes no difference to me, it's made in China (like a lot of companies now). I have no problems with "great" Chinese gear (I do own a Dussun amp) but this QA is unforgiveable, the first player I ordered was defective, and now this. Either NAD released a preliminary unit in 2006 or I am unlucky (again).
Whatever, the player works "ok", and I am keeping it and will buy some more SACDs and the transport is excellent (A Sony built one). However I would say you get what you pay for, and for $1,800 you could probably get more from some other company.
Cheers!
