First, - I'm not too sure how many others share my take on the "Mud Man," - some of it, of course, is a little bit of hyperbole.
Also, people aren't as vociferous with rock SACD and "alternative" rock here. And, - there just aren't that many SACDs available. I don't think that too many folks are buying the MoFi Redbook remasters, - REM, Velvet Underground, The Jam, U2, etc. etc. etc. The Redbook MoFI remasters are total SHITE IMO, - even worse than SACDs.
I don't know if this is just me, or MoFi catering to a classical crowd, or an (audiophile) crowd who are very sensitive to "sizzle" and sibilance in the upper treble. Sometimes, I think that MoFi is either mastering on ridiculously bright Krell gear, or purposely trying to cut treble.
Remember, the SACD Pixies disc is NOT a 4AD disc, but a Mobile Fidelity Disk.
And to be fair, it is my opinion that all of the Patricia Barber MoFi discs sound great....
No, I did not hear the other Pixies SACD: I didn't know that they had one.
I am going to re-buy the redbook Pixies re-master from a few years ago, - the one that has the "Come on Pilgrim" EP combined. It is a much better recording...Now I have to find a buyer to make some money back from that SACD.
Since Dead Can Dance is one of my favorite bands ever, I might buy "In the Realm" and compare it to my redbook. But, there's no way that I'm going to buy two or more, (as much as I love DCD), - without proof that they are not total mud....
As far as the DVDs, I have the beautiful DCD box set that I think came from Rhino. It has a DVD of "Toward the Within." The sound quality was a small step down from the redbook CD. And, the video quality was either purposefully, or not, super grainy. But, - it's cool to see them performing the songs.
I also have 2 live recordings from their reunion shows of 3 years ago: both are awful as Brendan had a throat infection. I think that there was a way to exchange them for a "best of" disc from their European tour. I saw them both nights in Oakland at the Paramount: it was sad as one could tell that the band couldn't hear themselves properly and both Lisa and Brendan were missing their vocal queues throughout. I also was amazed that they used so many computers and had the acoustic instruments set up on one side of the stage, and the computers on the other: surely a recipe for disaster. (That may sound incredibly cavalier: and one's first question should be, didn't they rehearse? It had to have worked before).
But DCD live shows have nothing to do with this....
Please take my frustration into account here. It is born from the fact that there is someone out there who cares enough to try and improve recordings, and then goes out and screws them up. Also recognize that this is just my personal opinion, I'm sure that there are folks out there who think that the Elton John and Sting SACDs are mastered way too bright and sound like crap...(BTW: I think that the Sonny Rollins and Getz Gilberto SACDs, and as mentioned, the Patricia Barber, sound great). I live in San Francisco, not too many blocks from the studio. As a songwriter/musician/audiophile, - I should go down there one day and kick at the door and get their side of the story, or the real scoop: depending from which direction the wind blows...
Cheers,
I know that you think that you know what I said, but do you realize that what I said was not what I meant?
