The dCS Verdi has a Sony mech. which is either the same as the one in the SCD-1 or a very close relative. I was talking to one of their top engineers about cleaning the laser (or, more accurately, lasers) a couple of weeks ago.

He recommended using an Air Duster (Dust-Off)held as close as practical to the laser assembly to blow off dust. As for CD cleaning discs he was more circumspect saying that they have found that some of these have managed to "pop off" the optics. However I have successfully used an Alsop cleaning disc which just has a couple of very small carbon fibre brushes. The engineer said O.K. but don't use it too often.
