Remember that mine is only the opinion of one man. It doesn’t carry any more weight than anyone else’s on AA—perhaps less than most. :)
Yes, I’ve owned and heard more than my share of excellent players—including all versions of the Meitner—and my regard for the SA-7S1 is well documented on these forums, but honestly, my opinion is pretty meaningless. Others who disagree with me have equally valid views, and that’s their right. Ultimately, only your own ears can decide.
Personally, I never enjoyed music as totally and immersively as when the Marantz was in my rig, but my experience certainly doesn’t apply to everyone. Others don’t like it, or think there are vastly better things out there. That’s fine. I trust what I, and my friends, hear. It’s simply a player that makes most arguments about which-is-better and what-does-what-better recede into the background, leaving the most important stuff—the music—behind. Therein lies the magic.
FWIW, I think the redbook playback is terrific. Marantz definitely has made great strides in this regard. But, as always, YMMV.
