I believe that “live” is the root of all audio comparisons, whether we realize it or not.

****I will always hesitate to compare any reproduced format to live music, apples & oranges, but I can somewhat relate...***

It's just a difference of approach to the hobby. I never hesitate to compare my home experiences to live. It's something I have done all my adult life. It's just that I have learned (still learning) to navigate the pitfalls. Like I say it is something I can do far more often/readily than most audiophiles have the opportunity to compare "gear".

I realize that many (perhaps yourself?) compare (attempt to compare) the sound of one piece of gear to another with one as the reference (or more often some gear heard months or years previously). In fact, for me and for many, that is the *real* apples and oranges....comparing gear. I will continue to use "live" as my primary reference, as fault filled, as that may be.

I suspect that most audiophiles, whether they realize or not, if they don't use a live reference, use what they *perceive* as a live reference when comparing gear. This (what I perceive) goes for me as well, for sure. An important difference is that I, and many others I know (mostly live music lovers and non audiophiles, ironically) *actively* and *purposefully* make live the reference instead of *indirectly* or subconsciously as do many audiophiles. I believe that “live” is the root of all audio comparisons, whether we realize it or not.

*****The vast majority of MC examples I've heard to date are "skewed" way beyond fine stereo reproduction.****

Absolutely agree. Which is why I said that I believe that multi-channel SACD has the greater *potential* to bridge the gap as what you experienced with the well executed multi-channel you so vividly described. Two-channel is about maxed out in its potential. Multi-channel is in its infancy and already has the capability to exceed the quality of two-channel reproduction.

****All I ask of my main system is the ability to help suspend belief for a period of time - to place the musicians and performance (either live or studio) within my rooms bounderies. I don't expect it to sound live - because its NOT live.****

All too true and readily understood by all. But I believe most want our systems to sound as close to live (what we perceive as live) as much as possible. To “suspend belief” probably implies that. An advantage of vinyl is that with all the available tools to shape its sound (step up transformers that sound vastly different from one another, different cartridges that vastly sound different than one another, different sounding tubes, numerous cartridge loading choices that each alter sound, etc., that I described in my last post) it (the source) can more easily be made “custom” to the listeners tastes.
