I don’t think you read my post closely enough. I simply said that when a player is as well executed as the SA-7S1, a modifier has to be very careful not to upset the balance of virtues that the original designers had in mind. I never said that mods don’t work, or that great players like the Marantz can’t be improved significantly. (The SCD-1 and Esoterics, like you said, are great examples.) They indeed can, and I’ve heard many situations where they have been. I’ve owned quite a few modded players. But change and improvement are two different things. I’ve heard more than a few players where the modder totally screwed up what made the player great in the first place, and did nothing but change the sound, not necessarily improve it. That’s not to say there aren’t many modders out there who can greatly improve an already excellent product—there certainly are, and I know a few—but a prospective buyer should always proceed with care when shopping modders, as with anything. That’s all I was getting at. I’ve been around the block enough times not to automatically assume “due care and attention.” I now shop very carefully.
