My one friend in New York actually replaced a heavily modified, battery-powered SCD-1 with an SA-7S1. While he was auditioning the Marantz, he invited me and several local audiophiles over to listen to the two. Everyone in the room preferred the Marantz, much to my amazement. He later stacked it up against a modded Esoteric X-03, and again the Marantz came out on top. As I’ve said many times before, it’s a very special player with a superb balance of virtues that results in a shockingly natural and “real” presentation. It may not be the ultimate—what does “ultimate” mean, anyway, in such a preference-driven hobby?—but it’s pretty damn impressive to my ears.
FWIW, I’ve heard the SA-1 numerous times, and I always liked it a lot. Never compared it to a modded player, but it was a terrific unit. I wish I had one on hand to see how far (if at all) Marantz has come with the SA-7S1.
