Have heard the Marantz a few times before deciding on getting an Esoteric X-03SE. I would say that while the Marantz has some "stereotypical" vinyl characteristics (a light treble and warmer midbass), it does not sound analog to me. Neither does the Esoteric, which I am using in the same system as my LP12. For me, all good CD players sound good and allows you to hear into the recording, but good analog helps you hear into the music. For example, jazz recordings from the 60s don't sound clear or high end on the LP12, but it sounds "good", whereas the Esoteric will render it clearer, possibly more real on an individual instrument basis, but doesn't sound as "good".
The one incidence where I find a CD rig to be more similar to analog is the DCS Scarlatti stack (The Paganini doesn't work for me, particularly for its still high, though lower than Scarlatti, price). However, I still find analog at 1/3 the price will closely match its details but will definitely do better in music. An even cheaper analog rig will lose some of the hifi qualities but will still be better on the music front.
However, since we do listen to new recordings, we do need a decent CD player, but I personally think the law of diminishing returns becomes rather strong once you go above US$10k. Above that price, normally you get more hifi but not more music.
