Bottom line, digital and analog will always sound different. I’ve never subscribed—and will never subscribe—to the theory that one format is better than the other. There are just WAY too many variables, not the least of which is listener preference. I personally like what digital offers sonically, but I’m obviously in the minority on these fora.
That said, two of my friends own very high-end analog rigs, and since they’ve gotten their SA-7S1s, their LP listening has fallen off sharply. Take it for what it’s worth, but I’ve heard the same from several other people as well. And, in PFO, Doc S. recently said that the only source he appreciated as much as the SA-7S1 was a fully tricked-out Walker Proscenium ‘table, somewhere north of $40,000 now, I think. Given that I regard the Walker as one of the very best turntables available—and was a cat’s whisker away from ordering one a few years ago—that’s pretty high praise indeed.
IMO, the Marantz manages to convey a lot of the presence and “magic” of good analog playback, and that’s why it’s so popular, especially among people who formerly wouldn’t touch a CD player with a 10-foot pole. Does it sound exactly like analog? Nope, and it never will. No CD player will. Is that such a bad thing? Not from where I’m sitting. The SA-7S1 simply makes music, and does it in a way that’s truly magical. IMO, it renders a lot of these dogmatic, what’s-better pissing contests moot. If you enjoy it, who cares if it uses a laser or a stylus?
