I have only listened to the SA8260. The 8001 is about the same. I hooked mine up one time a a local audio meeting after several modded Toshiba's were played.
The attendee's all said the Marantz sounded better than the couple of flavors of Toshiba's. The is expected, a 800.00 player vs a 70.00 player with 20.00 worth of new parts inside. The difference in sound was what was surprising. The Marantz exposed the colorations of the Toshiba's.
I later heard a stock Oppo. It was much better than the Toshiba's. But still preferred the 8260.
The Marantz players really have a house sound. It is closer to analog. Give yours 20 hours or so, and listen again critically.
