"Rasping and Blatty" - yes, and a characteristic of the natural horns used in the recording - rasping and blatty maybe but in the nicest sense.
Curiously I went back to re-read the Gramophone review and found that they use the word "rasping"too!
As for the tempi of the minuets I'll stick with my overall judgement that the tempi chosen overall are completely apposite and never sound rushed. I'll quote a snippet of the Gramophone review with the hope that it does not indicate any plagiarism on my part:-)
"Seldom, either, will you hear such expertly chosen tempi: generally these performances are on the quick side, but rather than seeming hard-driven they exude forward momentum effortlessly worn......Nowhere is this better shown than in the slow movements....and the Minuet movements of Nos 40 and 39". (Lindsay Kemp).
I hope that this encourages you to hear a magnificent pair of SACDs.
