I'm puzzled by something in your post (and, honestly, I'm not trying to be deliberately obtuse here): when you describe the brass sound as "rasping" and "blatty," are you being complimentary? Those terms don't strike me as being particularly flattering. Does this mean that the brass plays with the raw immediacy that we normally associate with period instruments? Just curious.
Also, I'm wondering about Mackerras's treatment of minuet movements in these symphonies. As you probably know, the conductor's earlier recordings of Haydn and Mozart on the Telarc label were somewhat controversial because of the tempos in the minuets. Fans found his tempos brisk and bracing; detractors saw the minuets as suffering from undue haste. How do the minuets strike you on this new Linn set?
