Also heard Gudamel conducting The Firebird by the SF Symphony Friday evening, and it was spectacular.

As often as I've listened to this piece live and on CD, including the MTT/SFSO on RCA and the Dorati on MercuryLP SACD, Gudamel brought out sounds and moods that I've not heard before. I agree with the Chronicle reviewer's comment that the orchestra has rarely sounded better. Gudamel is the genuine article. The audience's lengthy applause was mirrored by the orchestra's obvious enthusiasm and appreciation.
