The new double hybrid from Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on Linn (CKD 308) is simply unmissable if you like Mozart.
It is gaining quite a reputation already (see, for example, the review in the current edition of Gramophone or catch the BBC Radio 3 review in yesterdays' CD Review via the BBC i-player)). Modern instrument performances with the right size orchestra deeply informed by period instrument practice. One great quality is the choice of tempi in which Mackerras never manages to sound rushed yet maintains tension and excitement.
The sound is some of the best I have heard from SACD being warm and reverberant yet allowing full appreciation of detail. One can really imagine being there in the hall. And there's superlative playing. Just listen to some of the woodwind passages for great ensemble or the rasping, blatty brass sound. Marvellous strings of course.
Mackerras provides, for me, an ideal for this moment in time in this repertoire.
