...and no apologies necessary. Although I was exposed to classical early ( and through college), I mostly listened to rock and was more familiar w/ the warhorses due to the same progressive crossovers you mentioned.
It's only with advancing age, and exposure to the higher fidelity (compared to CD, natch) of SACD that I've really begun to listen to a lot of classical in the last 5 years or so.
And pssst: the 2 versions of Concerto I mentioned are the only recordings of Bartok I own (so far). If you like Bartok, you might also enjoy the symphonies of Shostakovich - huge, brash, modern, and cynical.
