You have lived a sheltered life when it comes to record cover spines. I have around two dozen records whose spines are shredded from cats sharpening their claws on them. (Not by my cats; these are LPs I've been given.) I've also seen similar damage in other people's homes. They are so shot that one can't even tell what the records are from the side.
