A friend of mine, a rabid fan of the Heads Up (division of Telarc) jazz group, Pieces of A Dream, dropped by this evening to listen to some SACDs of the group. He is very familiar with the CD equivalent but since I introduced him to multi-channel listening a couple of weeks ago two-channel has become a difficult option for him. So we listened to a couple of Pieces of A Dream SACDs, “Love’s Silhouette†and “No Assembly Required†as well as the entire “Jazzin’ Surround†SACD.At some point during the evening I made fleeting mention that the engineer (Michael Bishop) on “Love’s Silhouette†had just won a Grammy for his engineer work on a classical disc. Doug (my friend) knows *nothing* about classical music so I was surprised that he wanted to listen to the classical SACD for which Mr. Bishop had earned his achievement. Besides how do you introduce to someone who is completely uninitiated to Elgar, no less. So, I didn’t take his request seriously. But thoroughly impressed with Mr. Bishop’s work on the jazz SACDs Doug kept insisting upon listening to his Grammy winning classical work. I reluctantly relented fearing that he would be bored and I didn’t know what part of the Britten/Elgar SACD to play. Then I remembered the accolades Doktor Brahms gave this morning to the conclusion of the Enigma Variations. That’s what I played along with several other variations; Doug *loved* it! Seriously!
Do we have a new convert to classical music based on that experience? Probably not (even though while I had his attention I introduced a bit of Mahler 2nd (Fischer) and Widor’s Mass op. 36). But one thing for certain is that Mr. Bishop’s stellar work in “Jazzin†Surround†completely sold Doug on that SACD and he will certainly purchase two or more of the Heads Up SACDs that were sampled.
And yes, Doug wants me to help him set up a modest SACD multi-channel system. I will most certainly seek advice from the group here.
