I've still got the original Sony SCD-1. It's been over 7 years now. It's had quite a bit of use. Maybe 4 or 5 years ago, it had to go back to Sony for repair for the infamous, No Disc problem. It came back working fine, and has been working fine since then.
Now I notice a minor problem. When in SACD mode, I can put in a CD. In the past, it would detect CD, switch to CD mode, then go through the TOC and start playing. Now it does not switch to CD mode, it reads the TOC for a long time, then says "No Disc." However, if I manually switch to CD mode, everything works fine.
I am wondering if this is the start of the "No Disc" problem again. Was that sled motor? Or could it be something else? When fixed before, this was under warranty and it cost me only shipping to Sony. Now, however, if something gets worse and this stops working, it is not under warranty, plus the reports here of lack of parts and other horror stories will make me reluctant to send this back to Sony. Are there other options- or do I go with the Ayre, an option I've been considering for awhile. For now, it's working fine, but this has me thinking that it's an old machine and it could be the start of its decline.
