First, I do agree that the "Souvinir d'un lieu cher" is incredibly revealing, and as far as I'm concern, sonically, the "dark horse" of this outstanding disc.
However, your statement ****I find that surround tends to obscure tonal deficiencies****, I have never heard that or (of it) before. I don't believe there is any inherent reason why that should be so, if only because multi-channel should have more resolution. (Although the way some are mixed, or played back, if done poorly, can negate this advantage). I will for sure listen to the Fischer again, but thus far I have found that Tchaikovsky disc does fair better in multi-channel than in two channel, in every aspect that I have listened for, although it does not "smoke" the two-channel. Again, I will listen some more.
As far as the lack of "roundness in the instruments", that you express, what do you mean here? I frequently find myself, as a videographer, practically in the middle of or right next to string quartets (see my SA-CD.net comments on the Haydn quartets above) and with the Tchaikovsky SACD have not heard (and maybe not listened closely enough for) a lack of "roundness", *especially* when compared to other formats. (Keep in mind that I have found that some recordings both analog and digital can be artificially “rounded”). Although, I will the first to admit I do not possess a "muscian's ear" when it comes to knowing how a violin or any instrument is "supposed" to sound.
As I said at the top of this thread I have been dead wrong (many times), but I will come back and admit if I find that's the case.
