Hi,
I owned both, the Cary several times due to all having problems and had replacements up until November 2006. Cary was great about assisting, but the unit never stopped having problems, now they increased the price to $7,500 and sorry that way, way too much for this unit.
The Marantz does all that the Cary can do, it sounds better on red-book and as good on SACD (though I purchased it for red-book) I do miss the HDCD feature that the Cary had though.
The Marantz is a balanced, detailed, with body to the music; it moves you when you listen to your cd collection. The Cary had the same feel, but more upfront, the top end a bit lean, great bass though (its strong point).
I also owned the Esoteric X-03, and the X-01 and the Marantz beat them both hands down. In fact I would say the Marantz gives you the best of both the Car and the Esoteric units I owned.
I have had my unit for a good few months and last night I took a listen and I told my wife I am done worrying about my digital front end for a while, my wife says it the best you have ever owned.
Give it a try.
Phil
