<< That doesn't account for the (not uncommon) times that I am completely transfixed by the music at least in part because it is being beautifully reproduced by my system. These components, given the right software, can really sing, including great clarity, transparency and resolution. >>I think you misunderstood what I was saying. There are *lots* of systems that will sound wonderful with great recordings and offensive with marginal recordings. For example, here is an excerpt from a Stereophile review:
"As LP followed CD and vice versa, the [insert product name here, this is just one example] proved themselves transcendently neutral. Dry, dull, or aggressive recordings sounded much more so through the [insert product name here], while plush, overstuffed marshmallows sounded sweeter and cushier than ever, albeit more transparent than I had ever heard before. By definition, the "colorations" I'd thought I'd heard with some recordings were not that at all, as they were mutually exclusive and entirely recording-specific. What I was hearing was the unalloyed sound of the music as recorded. Depending on the recordings and the associated equipment, this was not always a good thing."
As a whole, we audiophiles have come to the view that this type of behavior is not only something we are stuck with, but actually the sign of a "transcendently neutral" product.
I disagree.
I don't think the reviewer quoted above was hearing the "unalloyed sound of the music as recorded". I think he was hearing additional grunge and hash that made ordinary recordings sound "dry, dull, or aggressive".
When somebody says that a component is so good that it let's you hear all the flaws of the recording, I think that is a bad thing. Please note that I'm *not* saying you want gear that hides the flaws. Instead, you want gear that doesn't amplify the flaws. This is one of the areas where there is a lot of progress to be made with regards to audio reproduction.
