Re: Anyone Compare the Same Recording on SACD & Vinyl?

209.245.160.198

i have compared a few sacds on my marantz sa-1 to both 33rpm and 45rpm vinyl in my basis/graham/koetsu/aesthetix vinyl setup.

the music;
miles davis, kind of blue
charles mingus, mingus ah um
brubeck, time out
jacintha, autumn leaves
jay mcshann, what a wonderfull world

in the first three comparisons there was a consistent pattern. the sacd was clearly better than the 33rpm vinyl on the davis, mingus, and brubeck in most every catagory. more detail, more articulate bass, smoother mids and more extended treble. the sense of venue, presence, liveness, etc. was on another level on sacd.the dynamics thru the aesthetix io phono pre were very close to sacd.

on the other hand i preferred the 45rpm vinyl to the sacd in most of the above areas by a very small margin on these same albums. the additional info in the grooves combined with the presentation of the aesthetix io tips the scales in vinyls favor on these lps. why? my guess is that the master tapes of these 40 year old treasures don't give sacd enough to work with to show off its advantages. also as much as i love my sa-1 its output stage can't quite compete with the aesthetix io.

on the two groove note albums the excellent analogue recording transfers much better to sacd. on these albums sacd blows away both the 33rpm and 45rpm vinyl versions even though they both sound great.

my conclusions are that it is too early to know for sure; but it appears that if the recording is high enough quality sacd will surpass vinyl. on the other hand since most of the music we hold most dear was recorded long ago vinyl will be competitive on this music. lastly, if you are not listening to 45rpm vinyl you are missing vinyl's best.

hope this helps.

happy listening!

mikel
