I've just upgraded my CD transport to one with SACD capability, and got to hear the format this week for the first time. It's absolutely stunning with most discs (I can't believe the Beck, Nat Adderley and the old Live from Studio A from Chesky!), but almost unlistenable with some others. It seems to me that some of the 2-channel mixes (which is all I can play) are much thinner-sounding than the original CDs (ie, the live Alison Krauss, among others). I have only a small sample of discs, but I'd say their sonic signature is lightweight compared to redbook CD, while they do have detail, air and space in spades. I don't think it's my player or my room, because all other CDs sound fine in this regard. I also don't think that the "extra" highs make it seem like the balance is tipped-up. I just don't hear as much bass or fundamentals, or whatever. Has anyone else noticed this?
