Agreed, what is popular and successful and what is 'good' and successful can be two different things. I believe SACD is successful because it fulfilled a need of a particular group, (audiophiles have been clamouring for such a thing since the CD came out), and was targeted towards that group. 60+ different labels are using the technology and profiting with smaller production runs. DVD is successful because of the media it carries: movies. DVDA marketers made the fatal mistake of believing that success of DVD = success of DVDA, without ever asking themselves if that casual consumer even wanted hi-rez; then even more fatally, indroduced DVDA to that consumer at the very time IPODs were becoming ubiquitous. The rest is history.
