Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Some recent SACD vs DVD-A sales figures.

Dark Side of the Moon SACD averaging 5546 sales/week in the USA.
The Police at nearly 3000.
The Stone's Let it Bleed at over 1500.

Latest Soundscan market figures show that even the best selling DVD-As are selling under 200 a week in the US.

These statistics are included in a small article by Barry Fox for this month's 'Hi-Fi News' magazine which suggests that the DVD Forum now sees a dual-sided DVD/CD hybrid as do-or-die for the DVD-A format's survival.

Apparently such a hybrid may fall outside both the CD and DVD specifications, and either not play - because the disc's plastics are an essential part of the optical focus system, or may jam in a player.

"It's believed that Warner is trying new pressing equipment from German company Singulus that produces 1.48mm discs. WG2 members are asking for legal advice on what they can and cannot do or say without falling foul of the law."

After having twenty years to plan for 'replacing' CD I find it mind-boggling that the DVD-A group could conspire to get just about every aspect of the format and it's launch wrong, and despite detesting Sony/Philip's manipulative tendencies at least they are effective and have some semblence of a long-range plan.
