***That's not the way I'm reading it. It seems that most DVD-A players are video players and until recently weren't getting the best from the discs and the comments I've been reading have all been praising SACD.***At this moment all DVD Audio player are DVD Video players.
And even the best players will not get the most out of the disc as current dac's deliver at best a s/n ratio and dynamic range of 120dB.
20 bits resolution is currently the best we can get. But there is room for improvement.***How many actual DVD-A formats exist? 20 and 24 bit quantization, 88.2, 176.4, 96 and 192 kHz sampling? Are they all used by different software manufacturers?***
Actually 3 at the moment version specs 0.9 1.0 and 1.1.
The various different sample rates and bit depths are used by the studio's recorders early digital recordings had 16 bits at 44.1ks or 48ks and that evolved through 20 and eventually 24 bits. The same happened with the sample rates. All these bit rates can be used on a DVD Audio so it's possible to deliver the real deal instead of format conversion.***Finally, is it true that one has to use a video player to display the DVD-A tracks in order to select them?***
No not true, except for some early player models that have a poor user interface and a very small number of disc with a poor user interface design.
