I'm using Etymotic ER-4S (they also have a similar low impedence model, the ER-4P) and find them quite satisfactory. They are what are called IEM's (in ear monitors), that is they are inserted into the ear canal. Earbuds sit on the outside of the canal.

At roughly $300 I find them a good value.

However, your subject line askes about "best" portable setup. There are several IEM's that price out over $1,000 so those might be a consideration. I have not heard them so I can't comment.

In the $300 rannge, from my experience, the Etymotic ER-4S are worth looking at.

But some people find IEM's uncomfortable and prefer an over the ear arrangement.
