I travel a fair amount for work, so I periodically try to find decent solutions for improving listening on airplanes.
I've tried a variety of over-the-ear active noise-cancelling headphones as well as in-ear phones, which are more noise-isolating.
I haven't tried the latest round of offerings, but at least of a couple of years ago, I had yet to find any over-the-ear actives that could truly best my Etymotic in-ear headphones - especially considering the big difference in ease of carrying and stowing them.
Ety's aren't cheap, though, and now there seem to be a lot more higher-end in-ear (as well as active over the ear) phones. But for airplane use, you owe it to yourself to at least audition some good in-ears.
