Thanks for the reply. I decided to try the Stax with the old tube amps and so far I am pretty impressed with the sound. I have listened less than an hour so I am not ready to declare the search over.

My Stax are also the Gold edition if that makes any difference. Most of the older reviews I have found highly praise them.

If I do go the new route I will try and listen to the HD600's as well.
