Focus on getting the best source + amp you can, first. Worry about the cans later. A great system upstream of the headphones will improve the sound of any decent set of headphones and allow you to make better comparisons between competing headphones. My experience is that a better source + amp combination matters more than better headphones for sound quality.

I'm in the minority, i think, as I see many people on head-fi with a far more smaller investment in their electronics than in their headphones. What a waste of $$$.
