Not trying

Years ago I had a job (electronics technician) which required skill well below my capabilities and my Sennheisers became essential for that (not from a computer though).
Now, to excel at my job, there's no way that I could listen to music if I'm really doing my best: high quality, and fast. Although if my employer valued that aspect sufficiently, I would have my own office rather than noisier cubicles.
So, on the one hand, most people that I see listening at desks at work, I don't think are pushing themselves. Most surely seem to be slackers. On the other hand, while I can't drive a car safely and navigate well while talking, music helps me focus and gives me a kind of rhythm and helps my driving generally.
I allow for the fact that everyone is different, but agree that generally it seems to be people not trying too hard.
