Well that's incredibly frustrating. Yes, time to look at a different model!

Do you think you'll stay with noise cancelling headphones? There was a recent review by Tyll Hertsens you might want to read. Just a data point for your consideration. I don't actually have any personal experience with any of these.

For the situation where I want to exclude outside noise I use either my ATH M50 closed back headphones or my Etymotics IEMs. Both work well at noise exclusion... the IEMs are amazing in this regard.
