I bought an obsolete mp3 player on the weekend at a clearance price(Toshiba Gigabeat F40) because Rockbox (an alternate operating system/firmware for mp3 players) works on it.I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that the F40 has a DAC that supports sampling rates up to 96kHz, and Rockbox will happily play hi-rez lossless files at this rate (FLAC or WavPack).
So there is a roundabout way to listen to DVD-Audio on a portable player. Just rip the 2ch track onto hard disk, compress using FLAC or WavPack, and play back on a Rockbox player that supports sampling rates higher than 48kHz.
