I received an email from Classic Records announcing the release of a new DVD-Audio disc with Gary Karr playing the double bass. I have put the link below to the description on the website. I ordered the disc and used the bonus points I have earned, so the total cost for me is less than $9.00. Not too bad. I continue to support Classic Records, in spite of the whining I do about them.
As an aside, some of you who read the reel-to-reel section of Audio Asylum or the audiophile magazines will know about The Tape Project. This is a small San Francisco based company issuing 15 ips analog 2-track tapes for the ulitmate in high fidelity sound. I am sharing a subscription with two other people. Tapes are expensive at $200 each. I have committed to two tapes. It is my splurge for the year.
I received the first tape this week, the Reference Recording issue of Malcolm Arnold Overtures. The presentation is first class and the sound is stunning. The sense of ease, the wide, natural dynamic range, the fine details at very low levels, and the airy, open acoustic with only two channels are all there. And most of all there is beautiful, 3-dimensional string sound with no edginess.
I understand that Reference Recording will be issuing some of their recordings in a format called HRx. This is described as a DVD-R with WAV files sampled at 176.4 or 88.2kHz. No downloading because of the large file size. It's not clear to me whether these discs can be played on a conventional player or will require a special computer setup. If it's the latter, they get a big raspberry. Can anyone clarify this?
