It is time for an upgrade for a new or newer used CD player. I have an old Pioneer DVD333. I tried a Toshiba 3950 (I believe) a few years ago after all that rage on AA. The Pioneer was far better than the factory stock 3950. Then, I upgraded the 3950 to Burr Brown ICs and superior capacitors including some expensive capacitors in the audio section. Spending well over $100 just in parts, the Pioneer still sounded better. The 3950 was still harsh sounding. Kind of a disorganized edgy performance- just really sick sounding to my ears.
To provide some background on my audio system, my all tube DIY system is fifth generation. Present DIY preamp/main amps cost over $1000 just in parts & tubes, but worth every cent. My speakers were ProAc 2.5s and the new DIY speakers are far superior to the old ProAc 2.5s. So, I can hear high quality or lousy components- no problem.
Any new or used CD players in the $300-700 range that will outperform the old Pioneer? Or, do I need to spend more?
