Some of my most enjoyable audiophile experiences were with an Audible Illusions preamp and Hafler amp, both built from kits, both cheap. Along with a Rega turntable and DCM Time Window speakers, this was a real audiophile experience and it wasn't that far above $1000, but this was a long time ago. Nevertheless, buying used can still get great bang for the buck.
Nevertheless, I have also found that my current Audio Research Reference One preamp pretty much blows away the old Audible Illusions preamp. At maybe 20 or 25 times the cost.
As far as "where's the fun" in the Caliburn turntable, I had great fun listening to it at the Stereophile show. I was listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan and all the tiny details of his playing were there in a way I had never experienced before. I understood Michael Fremer's assertion that time seemed to expand...there was so much happening that the song seemed to take twice as long as it ever had before...it was engrossing. This was really an amazing listen to familiar music. I was sold. If indeed I reach a point where that becomes affordable, either because I find it cheaper or because my investments hit a new level, I'd do it. It would be fun for me.
