I don't think anyone with a budget of $1000 expects an audiophile experience. I've known a few collectors with very upscale systems, and I always get the feeling that they have assembled these pieces really to impress visitors and friends. The price tag is all they use for the guiding structure of their stereo. They don't know why or if one component works with another -- as long as there's lots of zeros on the sticker. For myself, I prefer to discover "sleeper" electronics that sound great and have been overlooked by the showoffs. I think it's a lot more fun to find good sound without going into hock. Where's the fun in spending $100k on a turntable?!?! That isn't audiophile -- it's the Twilight Zone. A budget always forces you to be creative -- there's the enjoyment.

That's why I have found 96/24 DVD-V so exciting. The average "Joe" can transfer his precious vinyl to hi-rez digital, do a clean-up, burn it to a $0.22 DVD disk, and have wonderful audio, ...and if he wants to do a little tweaking, he can get some serious sound going.

I love excellence, and luxury -- and applaud the creators of those ultra-high-end components. ...and I am grateful to the billionaires who support that rarefied strata of stereo. These pieces are works of art, and their patronage is as important as audio for the masses. And I hope the buyers are enjoying themselves as much as I am with my humble, vintage tube Marantz and classic JBL.

By the way, Charles Hanson is a brilliant and talented electronics designer. He is one of the forces in modern sound, and his generosity on this forum and helpfulness with individuals should be applauded. I wanted to sincerely appologize for misunderstanding his comments on DVD audio. As they say, "he has forgotten more than I will ever know." Mr. Hanson's accomplishments have indirectly helped us all arrive at that place of our own audio bliss.

A very contrite, ....Pandro
