Mr. Hanson, ...I struggle to find your logic. You obviously are a one-man band trying to raise the bar for the definition of "Audiophile." Gurus who tell us that we need to spend a fortune to have good sound are as dated as their argument. Unless one is a billionaire with money to burn, it would be crazy to throw the kind of cash you talk about into ANY digital toys. This technology is coming at us with such speed that sensible people factor-in steep depreciation before buying.
Once again, my entire pich is that DVD-V 96/24 stereo is here, it's cheap, and it sounds GREAT! If it's not "Audiophile" enough for you, it's probably because your creative efforts have taken a wrong turn in the market. This is a brutal business, and we all forgive you for the sour grapes.
I give more than "two figs for hi-resolution sound" and I will purchase an Oppo DVD player. ...and feel wonderful that I haven't overspent on a box that will be surpassed in six months. ...and if it sounds better than my dinky Sony (which already sounds amazing), I will really be thrilled.
Good sound has a point of diminishing returns -- especially with the 96/24 files. Where does one draw the line of satisfaction for musical enjoyment. I stop when I can no longer hear improvements. ...and a wise enthusiast knows where money needs (or does not need) to be spent. Snobbishness has always been rife in the audiophile community -- it's what makes that market hum.
