Mr. Hanson, ...Thank you for the response. I wouldn't dream of accusing you of having an agenda, but the points you make are curious. I understand that you might want to support your superb product, but the market will ultimately find its own leveling point -- and what doesn't work will finally be in tomorrow's landfill.
I've been an audiophile for over twenty years, so I like to think my hearing is fairly well tuned to good sound. I bought my first computer DVD writer a week ago ($32.00) -- and I invested in some Sony DVD- blanks @ $0.22 each. My el cheapo Sony DVD player (from Best Buys) put me in the hole for $79. I'm using the free trial Audio DVD Creator, which I intend to purchase for $39.95. When I burned my first disk with 96/24 stereo files, on playback, it put me in total shock (I nearly fell off my chair!) -- I scarcely remember vinyl sounding this good! And I have not yet done any tweaking or upgrading.
I don't think the Chesky boys have given up on ANYTHING. They are with the rest of the pack, lying in the bushes waiting! After a few missteps, the music software people all know better now -- we're not going to see any commitments until the dust settles on the "greed-war" ...and that may be a while. You make it sound like they are shrinking violets. I work in the music business -- and the only way to discourage them is to drive a stake through their collective hearts.
I must also address your fatuous comment of needing to spend $5k to $10k for a good DVD player. Gimme a break. Maybe you have the hearing of a terrier -- I don't! I should direct you to the following webpage: http://www.audaud.com/article.PHP?articleID=1701 For the price of $150 the "OPPO" DVD 970 HD offers high-end sound that has been widely acclaimed -- please read the reviews. ...and it plays a myriad of formats, for the diehards.
I think DVD-V 96/24 stereo is the first possibility (since vinyl) of cheap, audiophile sound for the unwashed masses -- whether they want it, or not. And please tell me what audio-geek is rejecting it for sonics?
I hope your comments are not colored by other loyalties.
Your obedient servant, .....Pandro
