Primarily because the world isn't pining for sound quality better than CD. I went to a show and heard the demo of this format during this time. Like most show experiences, the sound quality was underwhelming. I had run into a coworker at this show and he walked out of the demo saying there's a sucker born every minute. DVD players were not being engineered or sold for high quality sound. As natural as this concept may seem, very few people consider DVD a music format, they consider it a movie format. Ironically, here, 10 years later, DVD-Video may be the last hi-rez audio format standing. 96/24 stereo can be sent over the Internet, it can be burned onto a DVD-R by a home PC, it's downloadable, rippable, copyable, all the things that the copy protected formats are not. And people in general like all these features. Record companies of course hate them, but some people will figure out how to make money from the audiophile download market.
