As an historian I have often found that to every complex question there is a relatively simple answer, and for my taste Mr. Hansen hit the nail on the head. If we couldn’t be satisfied with DVD audio playable in all DVD machines with 24 96, why not simple DVD-A discs with one (192 24) or at the most two tracks (the second for those who want to hear music coming over their heads in 5 track.) But OH NO! We get DVD-A discs with five(!) versions: 1) Advanced resolution surround, 2) Advanced resolution Stereo, 3) Dolby Digital Surround Sound, 4) Dolby stereo and 5) Special features. This is ridiculous; all the more so since they are quite difficult to navigate.
I don’t know if I agree with Mr. Hansen completely with his critique of SACD. I have some Riverside Monk reissues and they sound quite exceptional and, no navigation problems. Then again, DVD at 96 would sound at least as good.
At any rate, none of the DVD-A discs I have are for enjoyable listening. I must be up for an intellectural exercise in audio navigation. The satisfaction will mostly be in knowing that I finally found the appropriate track (or did I?) with the music being secondary.
But again Mr. Hansen, it’s not simply “following the money.” If this were so the DVD-A manufacturers would have learned long ago that their present 5 separate tracks for one selection approach did not result in increased sales!
I own your equipment and have found that, with all of CDs limitations, Redbook can sound acceptable even when not up to what’s possible. What a shame. No one is served in the persent situation. Not the manufacturers, and certainly not the music lover.
