Those pitch problems are just maddening.
I agree with you that Sargent is a pretty low-energy conductor compared to the others you mentioned who conducted for Everest (although, IMHO, Copland's recording of his own Third Symphony features some awfully cavalier execution on the part of the LSO!). I'd also put in a good word for Leoplod Ludwig (Dvorak New World - didn't hear his Mahler Ninth), and I'd love to hear the Rudolf Schwartz recording of the Mahler Fifth in this series. Perhaps Classic Records is ironing out the kinks with these first few (mostly Sargent) releases, but it's getting more and more difficult to justify paying a premium price for these discs when certain basic issues, such as pitch stability, are not attended to with the same care shown in the last incarnations of these performances (i.e., on CD).
