Yes - these are both great recordings. Like you I had the 3-disc Philips box on LP. I now have the CD's on Berlin Classics. Also, Neumann's Mahler 7 and 9 from that era are well performed and recorded. (The Seventh contains a couple of interesting misreadings of notes however!)
You could be right about the Macal Mahler 6 sounding better on SACD. (I haven't listened to that incarnation yet myself.) On Macal's earlier Mahler 3, I didn't hear much of a difference between the SACD and the DVD-A - but, in principle, I much prefer the idea of DSD-sourced recordings being released on SACD and PCM-sourced recordings being released on DVD-Audio.
