Earlier, I had been purchasing a lot of Christian music CDs that had the HDCD logo. These CDs were by different artists and I was happy that HDCD was getting more popular. But one day I realized that there was one common line in all the credits:
“Mastered by Hank Williams @ Master Mixâ€
And the credits always mention different mixing engineers from different studios!
I doubt if any of these HDCDs had a A/D conversion by a HDCD ADC or uses “peak extend†or “low level extensionsâ€. Hank Williams most probably ran the final mastered digital signal through a HDCD processor which means that most of the HDCD benefits are absent.I wonder why there are two different stages of mixing and mastering and that in different studios by different people. I no longer fall for these CDs just by the HDCD logo.
