Today I stumbled across some more information on HDCD. Please refer to the link below, and scroll to the bottom of the page.It states that John Marks Records (actually Bob Ludwig, the respected mastering engineer) used the Pacific Microsonics HDCD encoder (it doesn't say if it was the Model One or the Model Two) for the mastering of the disc "The Glass Bead Game". However only ONE feature of the box was used, and that was the dithering that reduced the word depth from the original 24 bits (from a Nagra D digital recorder) to 16 bits for CD release.
Please note that the following capabilities of the Pacific Microsonic box were NOT used:
1) Keith Johnson's excellent sounding A/D converter.
2) Multiple anti-alias filters with on-the-fly switching.
(These features were not used because they chose to use a different A/D converter.)
3) "Peak extend".
4) "Low level extension".
(These features were not used because they wanted to ensure optimal sonic results with non-HDCD-equipped CD players.)
And yet this disc will light up the "HDCD" light on an HDCD-equipped CD player. This is one example of an "HDCD" disc that will not benefit from HDCD decoding.
